Guys, I want to replace my Vortech heat exchanger with a 03 Cobra heat exchanger since it is much bigger. My questions are other than making mounting brackets will I have any issues with the pump, hoses, etc. My main worry is the pump, and it's ability to handle the additional capacity. I think it will, but would rest easier if someone has done this. Vortech was 0 help and it took me 10 minutes to explain why I was doing it:rolleyes: That was after 45 minutes of ****ty on-hold music. Any help or advice would be appreciated. later Ron

I was thinking the same thing. You are refering to the acto unit that was put on the cobra in a previous issue. If you look the vortech heat exchanger is small. I think I might spring for it and outside of making up mounting brackets I think it will be a nice improvement over the stock one.

Did you ever do this? I was thinking of putting one of the upgraded 03 Cobra heat exchangers in there. I have seen pictures of 03 Cobra's that have upgraded their stock heat exchanger it looks good and I am sure it will blow away the Vortech heat exchanger, performance wise.

I was also planning on running the water pump from a Lightning as I have read that it flows alot more than the Vortech water pump, plus it is OEM quality.

Jason, Man I forgot about this post! lol Anyway, I am in the process of doing this now. So far I have removed the Vortech unit and figured out where everything will be mounted. It looks like I won't have to cut anything as the heat exchanger will fit. I will be mounting it parrell to the ground. My brother is making brackets today and we will be reinstalling it this week/weekend. I will let you know how it goes or if there are any issues. Also, I have the stock pump and it hasn't had any issues yet, but if it goes I will get the Lightning one. later Ron

Are you using the stock 03 Cobra heat exchanger or are you using one of those nice aftermarket pieces by Afco or Gordsford?

Is the amount of room under there different between a 99 GT and a 03 Cobra. I was thinking only the front bumper was different. I will have to compare mine to my friends 03 Cobra. I have the 03 Cobra front bumper already.

Also, how do you have the pump setup? Do you push the water thru the heat exchanger or do you have it pulling the water thru?

Jason, Yeah I took the cheap way out and bought a 03 heat exchanger from a Cobra owner who upgraded. I got it very cheap so if it doesn't cut it I will buy the Apco or whatever brand. Not sure about the difference in the amount of room but my bumper doesn't have a big opening like the Cobra to mount the exchanger like it is in the Cobra. Therefore, I am mounting it parellel to the ground. IMO this gives a better cooling effect as and I have modified my rubber air scoop to force more air into the exchanger. I am also contemplating fans that I can turn on while sitting in the staging lanes. I have the pump setup before the heat exchanger so I would say that it is pushing it through but I may be wrong? I will have to take a look at that.
