I have a 1996 f150 with the 4.9 i6. Ive have the 5.8 built with a mustang/lightning style aftermarket intake. Ive taken ans shortened the TPS and AIC to get them where they need to be. I also have GT-40P heads without smog. Which is fine, I heard you basically throw everything way. but the truck i got the harness off of was factory smog delete. has all factory stamps and numbers on the smog delete pulley. but the harness has the plug for the sensor that connects to the #1 header. I'm not sure if i can also throw that out with the smog stuff or do i actually need it? also do i need the oxygen sensors? the harness didn't have the plugs for them. no cut wires or anything... did they even have oxygen sensor delete?? I have the computer for the truck too if that helps with the possible oxygen sensor delete. Those 2 things are the only things that are holding me back. I need someones opinion who knows these trucks better than i do.

Thanks, Avery

I own a lightly modded Gen 1 that I've had for the last 14 years. I've towed a trailer carrying a car, and it was fine.

Just make sure to find a Gen 1 that has the factory tow package, which includes the larger radiator, trans cooler and oil cooler, and of course the trailer hitch with wiring.

According to the folks at NLOC, towing with OD is not recommended.

I did the 4.9 to 5.8 swap, it was pretty much strait forward. Had to get brackets for the cross member that the v8 bolts to, then to get the engine to run with EFI, i went and got an untouched 96, complete engine and under hood harness and computer, plugged it all up. I read somewhere 96 was the only year they had the Crank Position Sensors so since my truck/computer is a 96 i tried to keep it all. It wasnt hard to find at a salvage yard. I kept the stock 5 speed from the 4.9 and had it rebuilt, its done fine so far. Only having issues with the distributor but i think i might have that fixed soon. This post wasnt as detailed as everything i did so if you have any questions, feel free to message me.

Hey guys I am new to the forum. Just picked up a clean 96 4.9 5 speed short wide with a bad engine for $200 and a running 97 f250 with a 5.8 for $500. Plans are to build a 408 and a TKO600. What kinda problem should I expect?

All gen1's have a Transmission Cooler and oil cooler thats standard. The bigger radiator is an easy upgrade no problem, same at hitch and wiring. You can get hitch system with wire kits for like $200 tops.
